How much does sedation dentistry cost?  Okay, time for a quick game of “Would You Rather?”. Ready, don’t think just answer…

Would you rather go to the dentist or have to crawl into a momma bear’s den covered in honey?

If you answered the bear’s den either you’re some kind of Bear Whisperer or you’re an ideal candidate for sedation dentistry.

It’s estimated that up to 15% of the U.S population don’t go to the dentist each year because of a fear of the dentist or “dental phobia.” Because this affects so many people, more dentists are training in the field of sedation dentistry. This is when your dentist will use some sort of sedative or anesthesia to make all your troubles go away (for a little while at least) during your visit.

Sedation dentistry makes a trip to the dentist more relaxing and stress free. And it can be used for any kind of dental treatment. From a regular cleaning to more invasive dental treatments.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?  Under $100 to over $1000 (depending on the type of treatment you need)

Okay, a range like that is not very helpful. Let’s dig in a little deeper to see what various sedation dentistry treatment options cost.

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is generally the least expensive form of sedation dentistry. Figure around $100 as a good average with the range starting around $50 and going up to around $200 per visit.

Next comes oral sedation. This is where the dentist will have you take a pill before your procedure to get you to your happy place. The cost of these meds average about $300 per visit with the range being from $150 – $500.

IV sedation is where the drugs are given to you through an injection. Average cost for IV sedation is around $600 (ranging between $500 – $700). The final cost here depends largely on how long your procedure takes.

The most expensive dental sedation option is general anesthesia. This is where the drugs put you under and you will be unconscious during the procedure. The cost range here is typically in the $600 – $700 range. Though, as with IV sedation, the final cost depends largely on how long your procedure takes.

How much dental sedation costs you will largely depend on the type of sedation, how long your procedure takes, where in the country you live and the experience level of your dentist.

Insurance generally will not cover sedation dentistry. However, if it is shown the sedation is medically necessary, you may be able to sweet talk your insurance company into covering part or all of your treatment.
